Over the years, driveways withstand a lot of abuse due to weather, cars driving up and down, or simply people walking across them. There’s only so much repair and maintenance that can be done before it comes the time to look into replacing it. Deciding what material to use when upgrading your driveway can be half the battle on its own, as the options are endless. However, most people find themselves understandably torn between two options: Concrete and Asphalt.
Both materials are great options and can create a beautiful-looking driveway, but their differences in cost, aesthetics, maintenance, and durability are what make this decision much more difficult for some.
Below we examine the pros and cons of both materials to help determine what the best option for your particular project is.
Cost
Generally, the initial cost of Asphalt will be lower than Concrete. How much lower will depend on your region and the prices of materials. However, Concrete requires far less maintenance and repair work than Asphalt, therefore it can end up actually being more cost-effective over time.
Maintenance & Repairs
Concrete requires far less maintenance than Asphalt, and only requires regular cleaning and optional sealing every few years in order to keep it looking brand new. Sealing the concrete is not mandatory, but will help to enhance the colour of the cement and protect it from stains. Concrete stains are more noticeable than Asphalt stains due to the fact that concrete is not usually black and would be more difficult to repair. On the other hand, Asphalt does require resealing every 3-5 years to protect the surface and lengthen the lifespan of the driveway.
Both materials may crack with time, but concretes durability will make the effects of the elements not as prominent.
Durability
With the proper maintenance and weather conditions, concrete can last a lifetime. Concrete is much stronger than asphalt and can handle much more weight making it a great choice if larger vehicles will be parked on your driveway. Maintenance is much more important when it comes to asphalt as the material is weaker and deteriorates much quicker.
Curb Appeal
Concrete is much more customizable compared to Asphalt. You can create different designs, textures, and colours to suit your home’s style. Many find concrete to be more aesthetically pleasing than asphalt, as it can look more luxurious and polished. Asphalt only comes in one color and very limited finishes. There is far less room for variability in design and aesthetic appeal.
Selecting the right material to match your lifestyle boils down to your budget, look, and what you will be using it for. Both materials have pros and cons, and we would be happy to assist you in making the best decision for your home.
